Child & Adult Protection

The Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies Golfing Association are fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children in its care.  They recognise the responsibility to promote safe practice and to protect children from harm, abuse and exploitation.  Staff and volunteers will work together to embrace difference and diversity and respect the rights of children and young people.  The SGU and SLGA are working together to develop and disseminate good practice for golf clubs.

The ‘Guidelines of Child Protection for Golf Clubs and Golf Facilities’ is now available to download - see Related Documents.  This document replaces the old SGU Policy and Procedures Document.  A number of clubs have asked for the template forms that are available in the Sample Form Section to help them implement their child protection procedures to be available in a format that allows them to be changed and printed off for their own use – see related Documents.

Protection of Vulnerable Groups Act 2007

In February 2011, the Scottish Government is introducing a new membership scheme that will replace and improve upon the current disclosure arrangements for people who work with vulnerable groups, i.e. children and protected adults. The PVG scheme is the Scottish Governments response to the recommendations of the Bichard Inquiry report following the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

The SGU/SLGA encourages all golf clubs to fully digest this new legislation which replaces the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003. This can be studied in full, at www.infoscotland.com/pvgscheme.  We will provide detailed training and support at the forthcoming Scottish Golf Club Seminars taking place this November. In addition we have provided this pragmatic briefing note to assist clubs with the impending changes.
