Flying Fairburn Notches Another Junior Win
19/04/10Torwoodlee’s Simon Fairburn continued his flying start to the 2010 season with a comfortable five-shot win in the second SGU Junior Event of the season at Newmachar in Aberdeen. The 17-year-old Borderer, who last month collected the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions title in St Andrews and reached the last 16 of the Scottish Boys Championship, posted a four-round aggregate of 286 to finish two-under par. Fine opening rounds of 69 and 70 on the opening day on the Swailend course were followed by a one-under par 71 on the more difficult Hawkshead course in the morning of day two, and despite a final round 76, Fairburn eased to his maiden Junior Tour victory. New Scottish Boys Champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) maintained his excellent form by finishing in a tie for second place on 291, three-over par, alongside Scotland Boys international Scott Gibson, fresh from a creditable fourth place in last week’s McEvoy Trophy. Pollok’s Conor O’Neil, a beaten quarter-finalist at West Kilbride, fired a superb seven-under par 65 in the second round – the best score of the event – to share the lead at the halfway stage, but couldn’t keep up his blistering golf on day two, eventually finishing in eighth spot. Ian Redford, runner-up in the Scottish Boys Championship, was handily placed after round two but struggled to rounds of 81 and 79 to end the weekend in 13th place.
