Kelllett: First professional win on Alps Tour

Motherwell’s Ross Kellett, who graduated from the SGU ranks last year, has claimed his first win in the professional ranks after victory in the Montecchia Golf Open on the Alps Tour.

Continuing a hugely consistent season from the Scot on the development tour, Kellett triumphed by two shots to take a huge step towards progressing to the Challenge Tour next year.

The former Scotland international signed for a bogey-free final round of 68 to post a 12-under-par total and win from Italian Niccolo Quintarelli.

Kellett, who opened with rounds of 63 and 70, made only one birdie on the front nine in Italy to give his challengers hope, but the Lanarkshire man made birdies at 10 and 15 to collect the silverware.

“I know I can compete as a professional, so I’m obviously delighted,” said Ross, who has moved to third place on the 2012 Alps Tour Order of Merit.

The top players on the Order of Merit win places at the European Tour Stage 2 Qualifying School and the top 5 win playing privileges on the Challenge Tour.

“It’s the result of hard work over many years, but it doesn't stop here," added Colville Park's Kellett. "I have to push on for the rest of the season and secure the top five.

“I felt comfortable being in the lead as I've learned over the years. It was still a huge relief when I tapped in for the win.

“Thanks to Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidas for their continued support.”

* Team Scottish Hydro’s Jamie McLeary will enter the final day of the Credit Suisse Challenge tomorrow with the title in his sights after a one-under-par third round of 70 left him just four shots off the lead, held by Frenchman Gary Stal.

“I just have to go out there and play my best tomorrow and see what happens. I've been there and done it before,” said McLeary, whose sole Challenge Tour win came at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts in 2009.

* Scotland finished in eighth place at the European Boys Team Championship in Sweden, losing 3-2 to Norway in their final match earlier today.

Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie) and Greig Marchbank (Dumfries & County) won their singles games.
