Hayston’s Alex Allan won the annual SGU Life Members Golf Day at Strathmore Golf Centre today (Tuesday 11 May) with 39 stableford points, pipping club mate Peter Ferguson by virtue of a better inward half.
The magic total of 39 was in fact shared by four players and so the three prize winning positions were sorted by card countback. Allan and Ferguson made it a first, second finish for the Dumbartonshire club with SGU Vice President, Maurice Shields (Windyhill), claiming third spot - the highlight of his 39 points total being a nett albatross at the Par 4 eleventh for 5 points.
Bridge of Allan’s Jim Black was the unfortunate player to be relegated outside the top 3 prize winning positions as a result of the card countback while defending Champion, David Howden, put up a creditable defence of his title with 34 points.
Meanwhile in the special prize section Hayston Golf Club made it a hatrick of prize winners with Jim Smart winning the longest drive prize at the 18th. Ayrshire Golf Association President, Alasdair Malcolm (Prestwick St Nicholas), won the nearest the pin at the 4th.
New champion Allan paid tribute to Strathmore Golf Centre on behalf of the 55 SGU Life Members who competed “it was a superb course with superb catering and a superb day was had - superb!”
