Nairn Dunbar edged out hosts and local rivals Inverness by a single shot to lead the eight qualifiers from today’s Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship Regional Final.

Club captain and George Anderson and secretary Jim Gibson combined well to card an excellent five-under par better-ball score of 64 for the Nairn Dunbar team, one ahead of hosts Inverness, whose pairing of Ewan Forbes and Blair France made home advantage count with fine four-under par 64 to book the second qualifying spot.

Garmouth and Kingston’s Christopher Banks and Innes Smith secured third place with a three-under par 66, beating Fortrose and Rosemarkie’s Arthur McArthur and secretary Mike MacDonald courtesy of the better inward half.

Brora’s partnership of Anthony Gill and Ken Lorimer reached the final in fifth place on two-under par, two shots clear of Aboyne and Turriff who shared sixth place.

The eight qualifiers will take part in the Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship Grand Final at Pollok Golf Club on Tuesday 21 September, with two more regional finals still to take place at Hamilton (14 July) and Williamwood (16 August).

Launched in 2006, the event is a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union and Belhaven, who earlier this year extended their sponsorship of amateur golf in Scotland for a further three years in an investment worth £250,000,
