Simon Fairburn & Jamie Lynch - SGU Junior Tour Event 4 Winners
In glorious sunshine and high temperatures at Brunston Castle today (Saturday 22 May) Simon Fairburn (Galashiels) and Jamie Lynch (Falkirk Tryst) shared the spoils in the latest SGU Junior Tour Event with a two under par winning total of 142.
Lynch, tied with Craigielaw’s Ewen Donaldson after the morning round on 69 (-3), ground out a one over par 73 in the afternoon which included a stroke and distance penalty on the 4th hole. Fairburn also incurred a penalty in his level par afternoon score of 72 when he lost a ball at the 16th hole, his seventh.
After a string of impressive performances on the national stage Fairburn was already topping the SGU Boys Order of Merit going into today’s event and is already eyeing more success; “It was great to come from behind and win today but I’d love to keep my good form going and get a major Championship under my belt like the forthcoming Boys Team Championship or the Scottish Boys Stroke Play.” However with school now behind him the Borders player will have to combine playing with his seasonal greenkeeping position at Cardrona.
Meanwhile Lynch was delighted to taste victory for the first time at national level. The Stirlingshire player who collected a bronze medal at the Scottish Boys Championship earlier in the season felt his victory was down to a stronger mental approach “I am concentrating on taking one shot at a time and this combined with a more mature slant to my game is reaping rewards. This is my last year in boys golf and so my aim is to sign off with a Boys cap. Performances such as today’s I would hope can only help my chances”.
St Andrews’s Ewan Scott was the only other player to finish under par with the English Under 14’s Champion posting steady rounds of 73 and 70 for a one under par total of 143. Fourth place on level par 144 was tied by no less than five players including newly crowned Scottish Boys Champion Grant Forrest who posted a 69 (-3) - the best of the afternoon scores in breezier conditions.
The next SGU Junior Tour Event will take place at Kilmarnock (Barassie) on Sunday13 June.
