Craigie Hill Best in Class at Dunfermline
17/05/11Bill Smeaton and Hugh McMaster from Craigie Hill claimed glory at the second Regional Final of the 2011 Belhaven Best Captains and Secretaries Championship with an excellent six-under par 65 at Dunfermline today. Committee member McMaster and Club Captain Smeaton finished two shots clear of runners-up Muckhart along with three further teams tied at four-under par to go one better than their runners-up finish at the Dunblane qualifier in last year’s Championship. It was an outstanding result for the pair, who in the club’s centenary year were delighted to raise further awareness of their club and in-doing so increase support for their fund-raising efforts as part of the club’s 100th year of existence, “We have had a fantastic day, to win the qualifier is a great achievement for our club, it gives us cause for even further celebration!”, said McMaster who is in charge of fund-raising at the club for their centenary year. “The course was magnificent today, it was also very fair and that was reflected in the quality of the results, we are delighted to come out on top”, added his playing-partner Smeaton. Also in the prizes was third placed Charleton who missed out on a runners-up place on the back-nine countback. Narrowly missing out on the prizes but also going through to this year’s Grand Final at The Torrance Course, Fairmont, St Andrews were Kinghorn Thistle and Canmore who also returned excellent four-under 67’s. In an extraordinary tight-field it was agony for Northern who missed out by one shot on the back-nine countback on 68. Their final nine holes of 36 was only just bettered by Stirling (33), Temple (34) and Balbirnie Park (35) who all progressed from today’s extremely competitive regional qualifier.
