One of the water hazards at the IMG Academy course

Scotland’s leading amateur Ross Kellett reports from the squad’s training camp at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida as the players prepare for next week’s Jones Cup Invitational and the season ahead.

Wednesday 27 January

Our third day started very early for me, up at 6.15 and we were all down for breakfast at 7.30. Another lovely morning, looking outside not a cloud in the sky. Perfect!

We started our work at 8.30 with an imagery session with The Doc. He was getting us all to think about all the successful and memorable shots we’ve hit in the past, which went down well with the boys, a really good exercise. Callum and Gav also had some good input for us younger lads, speaking about their experiences dealing with crowds and distractions at tournaments. It was interesting to hear what they had to say and hopefully I’ll have to deal with that in the future too.

After our session with The Doc, we headed out to practice, a few of us on the putting green and a few guys on the range. There was not a breath of wind, so it was perfect conditions to use the great facilities we have here. You can see why the top Tour pros get a place out here, it must make a huge difference to their preparation.

After lunch, we went out onto IMG’s on site Academy course and played 9 holes. It was a nice challenge with a few tricky tee shots and some very awkward pin positions which made for difficult scoring! Phil (McLean) came out on top with a hot finish seeing him to victory! Good to keep the competitive juices flowing.

Time for the gym after a tough but good day of practice. The guys worked really hard in the gym considering we had put a lot of graft in during the day. It’s a world class gym and great to get full use of it all week as it’s such an important part of preparing for golf these days. The staff in it will do anything to help so we’re all getting alot out of it. Even Ian (Rae) was shifting some good weights, good to see from the wee man!

We went straight to dinner from the gym, the food was great so we all got tucked in and I have to say we were all stuffed. Same routine after dinner and back to the apartment to chill out and have a laugh. Up early again tomorrow for an 8.30 tee-time which we’re all looking forward to as we get nearer the Jones Cup.
