The Stephen Gallacher Foundation Finals Day proved another roaring success at Kingsfield Golf Centre on Saturday, with 136 boys and girls taking part.
“It was a fabulous day,” said Scott Knowles, Manager of the Foundation. “Many thanks to everyone at Kingsfield for their help on the day, the course and food were fantastic.
“Special mention to Jane Allan, Robert Arkley and Lee Fraser for all their hard work and to Stephen’s wife, Helen, mum, Wilma, and Janet Fleming and our many volunteers on the day for their fantastic efforts. We have had great help from so many volunteers throughout the year and we, as a Foundation, salute you all.”
Helped by the professional coaching team of Jane Connachan and David Burns throughout the season, the golf on the day was of an excellent standard and befitting a finals day event.
Ruben Lindsay led the way in the Under-14 stroke play event with a fabulous two under par 32, with a 6 at the first. This was followed quickly by 35’s in the Under-12 boys from Harry Bent and Fergus Brown (Harry winning the play-off) and an excellent 42 from Blair Roberts in the Under-10’s.
The girls were not to be undone, in the Under-14 Girls, Jennifer Reilly and Alicja Gorka, scoring 42 (Jennifer winning the play-off) and Orla O’leary in the Under-18’s totalling 40.
With popular flag events also taking place for younger golfers down to the Under-8s, much fun was had by all. On top of the main event, a ‘Short Game’ World Match Play Championship also took place in which all of the children competed in. Jake Johnston eventually defeated Maisie Witt in the final.
This event also saw the completion of year long Order of Merits in the stroke play section. The winners were: Ruben Lindsay Under-14 boys, Brodie Cunningham Under-12 Boys, Kiron Gribble Under-10 Boys, Lauren Reid Under-18 Girls and Jodie Graham Under-14 Girls.
The aims of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation are to encourage and develop junior golfers in the Lothians and Borders area, with three-time Tour winner Gallacher also a member of the Scottish Golf Performance Committee.
