Performance Tier 3 – Competing
Selection into Tier Three is based on both performances at National competitions or representing Scotland at Boys/Girls international level. It is essential that the player can demonstrate the ability to develop within a high-performance programme. Players invited into the Tier must fit the qualifying criteria:
- Represented Scotland in Boys/Girls European Championships in the current year
- Top finish in a recognised GB&I or international event in the current year
- Performed consistently inside the top three in multiple events at Boys/Girls age category level in the current year
This list is not exhaustive and invites will only be given to players after verification by a National selection panel. This may result in some players remaining in Tier Two.
Academy member Connor Syme won the Australian Amateur title in 2016
The players within this tier of the SGA will be trained with the expectation of representing Scotland and to become successful on the European and World stage. Evidence of a comprehensive training and competition plan will be essential. Players must be able to demonstrate that they are progressing towards agreed goals and targets to enhance their performances at international events.
The players within Tier Three will go through a formal review and reporting process led by their Regional Performance Coach to ensure they are progressing, a six-monthly review process and an annual review with all support services completing a report to determine the next steps for each player.
If the player has not progressed they could be removed from the SGA at this point and offered a place within the Scottish Golf Development Academy programme if they are still aged under 20 on 1 January of that playing season. Some players will be offered a further year in Tier Three, while others could progress to National Squads dependent on their progress. A player may stay in Tier Three until the age of 20 where they will end their development in the SGA.
Players do not need to be a member of the Scottish Golf Academy to represent Scotland. Players are always selected based on merit and performances in National & International events.
