Wins for Watson and Stuart in Revive Active Women’s Medal Final

A birdie at the final hole gave Leven’s Dianne Watson victory in the Revive Active Scottish Women’s Regional Medal Finals (Silver Division), with Turriff’s Lesley Stuart picking up the title in the Bronze Division at a bright and breezy Crieff yesterday.

Having come through qualifying from four Regional Finals last month staving off competition from around 300 players, a field of 24 golfers from across Scotland gathered in the glorious Perthshire countryside for the culmination of the country’s biggest handicap event for women.

A combination of a testing breeze and slick greens on the beautifully prepared Ferntower course made for difficult scoring conditions, but 4-handicapper Watson handled the challenge the best, progressing over the front nine in three-over par and coming home in 38. That birdie three on the 18th was to prove crucial, tying on one-over par 75 with Catherine Duncan (Stonehaven) and with the players also matching inward halves, it all went down to the final hole on the countback.

Duncan made her charge with excellent back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th, but was left to rue a costly bogey on the short par four final hole, to miss out on the narrowest of margins. Haddington’s Sharon Lynch, an 8-handicapper, also enjoyed two back nine birdies to help her secure third place, one shot back on two-over 76.

In the Bronze Division, Stuart’s nett 76 (20) gave her a two-shot win over Milngavie’s Mandy Allan, with Borderer Ingrid Swan (Duns) taking third spot a further shot back on 79 (24).

“It was a great day and Crieff was in fantastic condition. I’ve never played in the final before so it’s nice to come to such a wonderful course and win. I’m looking forward to going back to Turriff to celebrate!” said a delighted Stuart.

The event was sponsored for the first time by Revive Active, an Irish-based health food supplements brand, who also support women’s golf in Ireland. Representing the sponsors, Marketing Manager Joanne Clancy said:

“We are delighted to sponsor the Scottish Women’s Regional Medal Finals this year and I would like to congratulate all the players who reached today’s final. Our products are a great fit for golf and it seemed natural for us to extend our support of women’s golf in Ireland across to Scotland for this hugely popular event.

“This is just the first year of a three-year partnership with Scottish Golf and I’m sure many golfers over here will benefit from using our products, like thousands of golfers do in Ireland, whether being energised by Revive Active or supported by our Joint Complex product.”
