England’s Jake Bolton held on down the stretch on his way to completing a wire-to-wire victory at the 2019 Scottish Men’s Open Championship at The Duke’s in St Andrews. Leading through 36-holes, Bolton made birdie on two of his last three holes on Sunday’s 36-hole final day to win by one stroke over fellow Englishman Sam Bairstow.
Bolton’s win sees the English player join an illustrious list of Champions including European Tour winners Tommy Fleetwood, Andy Sullivan, Richie Ramsay, Alistair Forsyth, Stephen Gallacher, Andrew Coltart and eight-time European Order of Merit winner, Colin Montgomerie.
Speaking to Scottish Golf after being crowned 2019 Champion, the Ogbourne Downs member admitted it is special to see his name on the same trophy with some of the biggest names in golf, saying, “This is a really nice way to end the season and to win it in such an iconic place like St Andrews is special. Seeing my name next to some great players is also brilliant and a really great reward for some of the free-flowing golf I played out there this week.”
Discussing his final putt on the 18thhole that would seal the Championship for Bolton, he added, “I hit a really good shot in at the last which ended on the right side of the hole. I am sure if it had landed on the other side, it would have been a completely different scenario.
“I actually had a similar putt this morning, and I holed that, so I knew what I needed to do when I got over the ball. I was able to hit it inside right and thankfully it went in for the birdie.”
Looking to the future, the newly crowned Champion is focused on continuing his Amateur career and now has his sights set on the next Walker Cup team, adding, “I am going to stay amateur for another year at least and see how it goes. Hopefully I can continue this run of form and make the Walker Cup squad in 2021.”
