Highland club Carrbridge are celebrating after the pairing of Scott Henderson and Charlie MacDonald took the coveted Belhaven Captains & Secretaries Championship title in glorious conditions at Elie on Tuesday.
The duo combined perfectly to record a six-under par better-ball net score of 64, edging out nearest challengers Hayston and Cruden Bay by a single shot to take the silverware to Carrbridge for the first time.
With 40 clubs from across Scotland taking part in the final, having won through from five regional heats this season, competition was fierce for bragging rights among the captains and secretaries fraternity. The famous East Neuk of Fife venue proved a perfect location for the final, with wall-to-wall sunshine and the course in fantastic condition making for low scoring as no fewer than 18 teams beat par.
“We’re surprised but delighted to win the championship and we’re very proud to be taking the trophy back to Carrbridge,” said club captain, Scott Henderson. “We both played very well and dovetailed nicely, with each of contributing evenly to the team score. Elie was in superb condition and the greens were great to putt on so we managed to hole a few good ones.
“It’s great for a wee 9-hole course from the Highlands to win this championship and we’re looking forward to celebrating this victory with the rest of our members.”
Their prize includes a four-ball at Open qualifying venue Dunbar and a tour of the Belhaven Brewery, the country’s oldest working brewery which will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2019.
The Hayston pairing of Allan Shearer and Jim Smart edged out Cruden Bay secretary Les Durno and captain Bruce Milton courtesy of a better inward half to clinch the runners-up spot, with Tarland Golf Club in fourth spot just behind with a four-under 66.
Belhaven Marketing Manager Gordon Muir said: “We congratulate Carrbridge on their fantastic victory and thank Elie Golf House Club for being superb hosts, with great feedback from all the clubs talking part.
“Belhaven are delighted to continue our sponsorship of Scottish Golf at both national and local level with what is one of Scottish sport’s longest standing sponsorships the Captains & Secretaries Championship is our way of thanking the clubs for their continued support of our brands.”
Each club in Scotland is invited to take part in the championship on an annual basis, with five regional qualifying events to choose from, running from May through to August. Regional events were staged at Douglas Park, Dunblane New, Elgin, Peebles and Prestonfield.
Carrbridge members Alan Boxx and Lewis MacBean have the opportunity to make it a double for the club this week having qualified for the final of the Scottish Club Handicap Championship on the Torrance Course at the Fairmont St Andrews this Friday.
