Members and Visitors Blanket Insurance Cover – Protecting the Golfers Means Protecting your Club

Many golfers don’t insure themselves against accidental damage or injury to third parties for a variety of reasons – for example, some assume that this cover is already provided by the club, that their household policy will respond or simply think “it won’t happen to me”.

Are these assumptions valid? Let’s look at this in more detail:

  1. Club’s Commercial Insurance:

DO you have adequate protection for your club and its players?

Whilst the public liability section will offer some protection against damage and injury claims, these may affect your claims experience in future years. Some  commercial policies have a ceiling on the number of or value of damage claims you can make and your excess may prevent you from claiming for small damage claims; for example damage to neighbouring properties, cars at the club or parked nearby.

This could result in the club being out of pocket each time an accident occurs.

  1. Household and other policies:

DOES your household policy cover golf related damage and injury claims? Is it designed for golf? Does it provide other benefits like Hole in One, Personal Accident cover and Dental Treatment while golfing?

Obviously every policy is different, but some may have an excess, while some may restrict cover for sports related claims. Can you be sure that your golfer is covered at all? Will golfers be willing to use their home insurance?

  1. IT CAN HAPPEN

Wayward shots happen all the time – that’s the nature of the game!

However in these litigious times, you and your golfers might actually be sued for these.  We are seeing more claims for golf ball injuries – some serious, some not so serious and at times this can be distressing to the individual injured, the golfer hitting the shot and the club trying to defend its own interest.

  1. ADDING BENEFIT – WHY SHOULD GOLFERS CHOOSE YOU?

Many golfers are now conscious of the above and expect Golf Clubs to have adequate level of protection in place. This may result in this becoming a factor when choosing a golf course to play or join as a member.

Building trust between you – your golfers – your neighbours – visiting golfers can also add value and can make for a more stress-free environment.
