118 clubs will be represented by 236 competitors at this week’s Scottish Golf R&A 9 Hole Challenge National Final as club golfers from across the country compete for a chance to play at Royal Portrush ahead of The Open Championship in July.
After a successful debut in 2018, Milnathort Golf Club will once again host the two-day National Final to decide the Scottish qualifiers on Thursday 13thand Friday 14thJune 2019.
The prize on offer for the leading two pairs on each day will be the chance of a lifetime, all expenses paid trip to the Grand Final over Royal Portrush on the eve of this year’s Open Championship. Scottish qualifiers will compete for the overall title against winning pairs from England, Ireland, Wales and, for the first time this year, Australia.
The free-to-enter competition not only brings players together from all over the country, but also encourages a diverse mix of ages and abilities, ranging from nine years old to 90, with handicaps between +1 and 54.
The format will see pairs from each club compete in 9-hole individual “handicap qualifying” stableford with the points totals of both players added together to make a combined team score which will be used to determine the qualifiers.
The event, now in its fourth year, continues to gather momentum with almost 3,000 golfers across Scotland taking part in club qualifying this year, underlying that shorter formats of the game are becoming increasingly popular in Scotland.
Fraser Munro, Head of Events at Scottish Golf, said:“9-hole golf is a great way to enjoy the game in less time, potentially broadening the sport’s appeal by making it easier to fit in with people’s busy lifestyles. The 9-Hole Challenge is a fantastic free to enter event with a truly unique prize and which we would encourage all clubs to enter. It is extremely positive to see the number of courses requesting 9-hole standard scratch scores and playing 9-hole qualifying competitions continue to grow and we encourage all clubs to embrace this format of the game going forward.”
