The largest ever field for a Faldo Series Grand Final has arrived in the U.S. for the tournament’s seventeenth edition, which tees off today.
A total of 99 golfers from 19 countries are with Sir Nick Faldo at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, USA for the World Amateur Golf Ranking event from 22 – 24 October.
Competitors aged 12 to 22 will contest for the title over 54 holes on the Old White TPC course at The Greenbrier.
A number of young Scots are involved, with Michael Brodie (Strathmore), Andrew Davidson (Charleton) and Alex Chalk (Dumfries & Galloway) competing in the boys’ event, and Heather Munro (Monifieth) and Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) in the girls’ contest.
Six-time Major winner Faldo will arrange for the leading boy and girl overall to play in a professional Tour event.
With the field divided into five age-groups – three for boys and two for girls – each age-group winner will also be invited by Faldo to compete in the 2014 Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in China next March.
Off the course, players will spend time with Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood and experts from TrackMan at the new Faldo Golf Centre. Faldo is on hand all week to spend time with the competitors, including several clinics and Q&A sessions, and to host a grass-roots initiative for local school children.
Supported by The R&A, The Greenbrier, ISPS Handa and the European Tour, the 2013 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 15 countries including six in England plus others in Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Chile, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Austria, Wales, Brazil, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, Greece and the USA.
Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
In September 2014, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona marks another significant step in the programme’s history.
